Conclusion In summer, during the protracted dry spell, elephants tend to congregate into the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary. Wayanad WLS already supports a large number of human settlements and the domestic cattle population attendant to it. These two factors lead to: (1) Human elephant conflict leading to death of human beings as well as elephants (2) Crop-raiding causing human hostility (3) Disease transmission between domestic and non- domestic stock (4) Poor health condition of elephants (5) Increased stress – calf mortality (?)
