Conclusion

In summer, during the protracted dry spell, elephants tend
to congregate into the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary.

Wayanad WLS already supports a large number of human
settlements and the domestic cattle population attendant
to it. These two factors lead to:

(1) Human elephant conflict leading to death of human
beings as well as elephants

(2) Crop-raiding causing human hostility

(3) Disease transmission between domestic and non-
domestic stock

(4) Poor health condition of elephants

(5) Increased stress – calf mortality (?)
