Cortisol, the secretion of adrenal cortex, is measured by solid phase RIA technique. We propose to measure the extent of stress and use it as a yardstick to understand what reduces it. Conditions and practices, which reduce stress, would be identified and prescriptions for implementations would be suggested. The study is aimed at developing a standardized ethogram to evaluate elephant behavior and captive elephant management practice and correlate them with a measurable parameter like cortisol. Captive Asian elephants are present in many different places in Asia as well as in the whole world. They share a diverse ecological and geographical habitat and vary grossly in terms of food habits, housing and training. The most challenging part of captive elephant management is that each location has to develop its own management schedule depending on available resources. Scientific observations should be blended with traditional knowledge to improved elephant management practice. 1. Director RADIOASSAY (Center for Endocrine Investigation and Research, Kolkata) 2.
