Another confusion is on the colour change of the multi-dose vial contents even after a single poke. Many vets consider this as contamination or inferior product profile. This is a tricky aspect for the pharmaceutical scientists ! Let us put it in this way. When you buy a multi-dose vaccine vial, are you sure that it contains the exact volume or whether 1 ml has been taken out of that ? The vial closure will behave intact as closure materials are of high specifications to seal the pores after repeated use so as to prevent contamination. So there should be a way out to find if a vaccine is 100% ' fresh '. A few manufacturers add specific dormant colour indicators which gets activated upon first use based on certain characteristics. This is in fact a safety feature for the veterinarian. Of course, not many formulators have made use of this technique and professionals may confuse such ' magic ' products to be inferior. A lot of research have gone into this colour coding for integration with the basic vaccine formulation. Meanwhile, one of our earlier issues had also discussed whether a single dose or multi-dose vial is to be recommended for various pharmaceutical reasons. Now, we shall also look into some of the practical aspects of cold chain maintenance. Frankly speaking, we should acknowledge that, it is quite difficult to deliver vaccines under cold chain to other parts of the country for several logistical reasons or may be held up at tax and security check points. The in-transit storage facility is also inadequate in many cases. Obviously, manufacturers have a deep insight into these issues and the overages compensate the deterioration of the product. On the other hand, drug authorities in some countries have made compulsory for the trade channels to invest in 'power invertors' and even power generators are not valid. Perhaps, the precaution is to protect the cold chain, but the fact is that refrigerators are capable to retain the temperature for a certain period even during power failures and generators can be used to power up occasionally. The idea of insisting power invertors is pretty confusing, as such devices are used mainly for power critical functions or when you need to watch TV without a few seconds lost ! The major field assumptions are made just by citing references in veterinary text books both ' for' and 'against'. November 2006 |
